Portabella Mushroom Burger

 
 
This grilled portabella mushroom burger recipe is an excellent picnic choice for vegetarians, but meat-eaters love this recipe too ;-) The portabella mushroom is considered the "steak of vegetarians". Serve on a whole wheat bun with your favorite toppings.
 
4   Portabella mushroom caps  
1/4 cup    balsamic vinegar  
2 Tbs    olive oil  
1 tsp    dried basil  
1 tsp    dried oregano  
1 Tbs    garlic, minced  
4 oz    mozzarella cheese slices (1 oz each)  
 

1 Place the mushroom caps smooth side up in a shallow dish.
2 In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour over the mushrooms. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or so, turning twice.
3 Grill on indoor or outdoor grill. Brush grate with oil. Place mushrooms on the grill, reserving the marinate for basting.
4 Grill for 5-8 minutes on each side on a medium high temperature, or until tender.
5 Brush with marinate frequently.
6 Top with cheese during the last 2 minutes of grilling.
